I know it is a bit early to be thinking about easter! But does anybody know any good knitting patterns for egg covers? Ideally in the shape of a chick or a bunny..

I also need a pattern for a tea cozy!

I'd be grateful for your feedback :)
Much love and happy knitting! Imogen

Backing a knitted baby blanket

Ok, I’m almost done knitting a baby blanket out of king tut cotton. I need to back it as the color changes, did I mention it’s pastel rainbow, fray a bit which seems to be in the nature of this yarn, even though it is wonderful to work with otherwise.

I was thinking of using white cotton flannel and just hand sewing it on the back, but has anyone ever done this? Or does anyone have any other suggestions that might work better? I’m a bit nervous about this aspect of the project.

shawl for boy

anyone knitted a shawl/poncho for a young boy? i free-formed one for my 6 year old out of recycled silk. i think it is adorable on him (will try to post pic soon)- very elfish. it's kinda more like a cape. it has a button closure at the top in front and drapes back from there. does that make sense? i am new at this.

my son likes it. his dad thinks it's more appropriate for a girl. my son agrees that it is girlish but doesn't mind that at all.

i can't recall seeing other boys in shawls.

wondering about this. . .

ok, i have a poncho i'm working on but i'd like to add an edging to it rather than fringe, as my cats will eat that, but i think i may have to miter some corners for a nicer look. does anyone have any recommendations on where i can find a recourses to learn how to do this without decreasing? is that even possible?

thanks,

Knitting classes.

Since I got a job at Michael's teaching knitting, crochet, freeform crochet and knitting, amigurumi and beadwork, I've been super busy making samples for the display boards, offering demos, and or course, teaching the classes.
I tried working as a store clerk and teaching, but that was too overwhelming, with them working me on the floor six days a week. I'm glad I told them I only wanted to do classes, because now I am happy.
Of course I don't have many students yet, being new and all. But word is getting out. It's the Michael's in Buena Park. So if you are in the area, drop in for a class schedule.

I also want to write some books about knitting and crochet. That's a more long term project.

Hi, I am new to the tribe and I am also a new knitter. I have been knitting since mid-April and I have already finished 7 projects. 4 scarves, 2 hats, and a coin purse that still needs to be felted. The hat I finished last night was my first cable project and my first in-the-round project. I am currently working on a seed-stitch scarf and a purse that will be felted.

I started knitting my sockapaloooza socks for the sock trade. I can already tell they are going to be too big for the recepient. However they are my size it seems. So I'm going to finish one, measure it, and if it's too big, start over. I'll make her 2, then I'll go make one to match the first one I made. Life is never simple.

Are you stuck in scarf land?

I've been reading various knitting posts on 43things.com and I see so many frustrated knitters and crocheters that can't get beyond making a washcloth or a scarf. Here are some helpful suggestions.

Easy fix:
You are obviously good at making rectangles. By making a rectangle and folding it in thirds, you can make a purse by sewing up part of the sides. The rest will be the flap. Learn how to make something called 'idiot cord' so you can make the straps.
OR:
Sew two squares together to make a pillow.
OR:
Sew 8 squares together to make a cube. A small cube can be a cat toy. A larger cube can be a 'ball' to play games with or a bean bag for a carnival game.
Sew a rectangle in half and make an 'envelope hat'. Add tassels or bells to the corner if you want.

Harder fix but worth it:
Learn to increase and decrease. Then you can get off the yellow brick road and on to something triangular or star shaped or whatever shape you can dream of.

Learn to knit on circular needles or double pointed needles. It's not hard. Once you can make tubes, you can make sleeves or a tube dress or a stuffed snake or a tube that doubles as a hood and neckscarf or tube socks or arm mitts (gauntlets).

Ready, set, go knit.

.

Hey all I'm new here....My name is Nikki. Love to knit and sew, actually anything crafty floats my boat! I'm wondering if anybody has a wonderful pattern for a Tam that they would be willing to share? My husband is working on dreadlocks and we need something to cover them at work so they don't get icky....my patterns for other hats are too tight! Thanks!!

How many of you are doing the knitting olympics? I saw it mentioned in a lot of blogs so I had to go see what it was. I don't even get the channel that is showing the olympics, so it was not of interest to me, but I know a lot of the sockapalooza folks are not even starting their socks until the Olympics ends on Feb. 24. They must either like pressure or be pretty fast at making socks.

I was reorganizing all my yarn, and I found a pair of mitts I had started. One was finished, and the other was barely started. I tried the first one on, and it's a wee bit too small. But I was so far along on the project I am just going to finish the next one, put that pair in my 'for sale' bin, and adjust the pattern, and then make another set for me. As tempting as it is to just start in on the new pair, I'm trying to finish projects. So I'm going to turn on my cam, sit at my computer and finish this 2nd mitt today.

After sorting through some knitting books yesterday I decided to make something soft and wispy on giant needles. It's coming along nicely. Just a warm little wrap to throw over a dress or blouse to add some elegance, warmth and style when the evening turns nippy.
And I restarted my sockapalooza socks using much smaller needles.

I love it so far, because you can click on a photo and then ask questions or compliment the person that made the project. The only downside is some people never say anything nice, but hopefully everyone will use this feature wisely.

Today I decided to create a new doll pattern. I'm going to call her Long Tall Sally. I just started on the arms and legs. I have to keep stopping to write the directions down so I can share them. I didn't really need to be starting a new project, but hey, I just couldn't resist.
I also worked on one of my Dr. Who inspired scarves. I still want to make a Slytherin Scarf but don't have yarn in that color. If only my deposits would go through, I could go get the yarn.

After bumping into someone in chat that was talking about felting hats, I decided I just had to try it. So I got my biggest bin of yarn out, dumped the entire thing on the sleeper couch and went through it all, And not a single skein of 100% wool in the whole bunch. Hangs head sadly. I get most of my yarn at Dept. stores, and they practically never have 100% wool. I've been to fancy knitting shops, and while they have wool, it costs an arm and a leg. I can barely get up enough moxie to buy even one or two skiens of it at those prices. And forget about buying enough to make a whole sweater. On rare occasion I'll find some at a thrift store. Sure, we all want the good stuff, but I can't justify spending that kind of money.

If you happen to live in Orange County CA, and can get to the Joanns in Cypress on Katella, they are closing the store and moving to a big new Super Store on Lincoln. So everything is on sale. Right now all the yarn dept. items at 30% off and they are extremely well stocked with knitting needles in straight, circular and bamboo. All the books are on sale too. Literally, everything in the store is 20% off or better.
Their goal is to have the entire store empty by the end of Nov. so the discount will keep getting better as the days roll by. But the longer you wait, the more things will be picked over.
So I went ahead and bought 2 sets of double pointed needles, a double ended crochet hook and some sewing patterns. All their sewing patterns (even Vogue) are $1.99 right now.

good morning fellow knitters,

i am starting my first sweater. i am so scared. yet i am sick of knitting scarves.

i took a sweater knitting class. which was really cool. but i forgot most of it. and i don't want to retake the class due to the expense.

but the teacher that taught the class was amazing. a certified Master knitter.

my question to you is should i try to do alterations as i go? and if so...how do i do that?

and gauge..i get so confused about gauge...i have that litle metal gauge tool and everything...but i don't know how to count the little v's or the little bumps i have a hard time seeing where one stitich ends and the other begins.

but i am good knitter. i am just sick of scarves.

any suggestions or advice?

bright blessings,
Do you find you knit less in the summer?

I've hardly had time for knitting this summer. First I had to deal with nasty dental work and weeks of pain. Just when I felt my life was somewhat back to normal, I ended up with a burst appendix and an 8 day hospital stay. Yukkers!
I've had the itch to knit, but felt so disorganized with all the projects I dropped when I went into the hospital. Soon I may be knitting and crocheting toys to send to Iraq to a soldier who said she'd pass them on to needy children.

I'm an ambitious but totally uneducated knitter - can any one tell me or refer me to a book that explains how to bind off to leave a stretchier edge. It seems like the side I cast-on (I usually use long tail) ends up nicer than the side I bind-off. I've been knitting shrugs from wrist to wrist and they end up nice at one end and tight/weird at the other. help!?

here's a pic of a poncho I knitted...

http://colombia.tribe.net/template/pub%2CViewPhoto.vm/context/pcard?page=1&currentoffset=0&parentid=1ddec7f5-9104-446c-a0b9-c76907925c71&sortby&rows&r=10432

it's very simple. I just made like 2 wide (cast 90 points) semi-long (75cm) 'scarves', then I sewed them together one wide side w/one long, and so on. and the I crocheted a 'daisies' stitch on the edges to add some weight to it cuz it kept kind of curling in.

I'm in Colombia, and I'm not very familiar with knitting terms in English. I think what we call 'points' here, you call stiches. I'm not sure, though.

Just before Christmas, Micheal's was posting signs in the knitting row that said 'Due to the heavy demand for novelty yarns, our suppliers are currently out of stock." But a few das ago I was back in Michael's and they had boxes and boxes of yarn they were putting on display. The line was full of people with yarn in their carts.

On another note, The Knitty Gritty in Anaheim just closed. I take it I wasn't the only one who found their yarns out of my budget. It's so hard for small shops to make it.

Starbucks vs Subway

Last night was the meetup I'd been working on for a month. I'd found a new venue, gone a few times to make sure it was a nice place etc. It was a new Starbucks with both indoor and outdoor seating.
So I get there at 7 sharp when the meeting was supposed to start, only to find the patio closed due to rain, and the entire inside of Starbucks filled with a Christian biker bible study and hymn group. There was only one empty chair/table in the whole place, and it was reserved for handicapped folk. After a few moments of wanting to pull my hair out in frustration, I went to the Subway next door and they said we could meet over there. So they saved me! Yay Subway.

At our last knitting meetup, someone picked a sports bar at Downtown Disney. Can you imagine trying to find knitters in a sports bar the week of the Olympics? Lucking we set up a grapevine to meet near there at an outdoor coffee shop. I think we has six people show up to knit. To find the knitting meet up in your area, go to www.meetup.com, put knitting in the search engine and go for there. As the weather cools off, more people will be getting back to their knitting projects.

Today at a Society for Creative Anachronism event I got a bunch of compliments on the hat I made. I saw one lady knitting a purple hat (a biggins). I also saw another woman knitting in her pavilion.
And my friend had her knitting bag with her and what looked like socks she was working on, but she was too busy to sit still.
Did anyone else spot knitters this weekend?

Beginners Tips

Try casting on with a pair of needles one size larger and then when you make additional rows, switch back to the size your pattern calls for. Most beginners cast on too tightly and get frustrated trying to knit the first row.
Knitting Tip#2
Tired of paying high prices for knitting needles? Try the thrift shop. Make sure to ask at the counter, as they tend to stick them in places you'd never think to look.
Then try EBAY. Sometimes you can get a whole lot of needles for maybe $10.00.

Well, so far this week I've knit a lion, a lamb and a horse. The knitting is done but I still need to assemble and stuff the last two.

I just went to a knitting meetup on Wed. night. We had fun, though Diedrich's was a bit dark for quality knitting. If you haven't heard about www.meetup.com, it's worth joining.
Also, the new knitting store near me has classes on Sat. If you are near Anaheim CA the store is at 50 S. Anaheim Blvd. near Lincoln (behind the Asian restaurant). Or see their website at www.theknittygritty.com.

Fourth of July Hat

I found this pattern a while back and it is a lot of fun to make. I would call it easy if you already know the basics. I've made it in a solid color, but with 4th of July just around the corner, I'm sorely tempted.
