I've been reading various knitting posts on 43things.com and I see so many frustrated knitters and crocheters that can't get beyond making a washcloth or a scarf. Here are some helpful suggestions.
Easy fix:
You are obviously good at making rectangles. By making a rectangle and folding it in thirds, you can make a purse by sewing up part of the sides. The rest will be the flap. Learn how to make something called 'idiot cord' so you can make the straps.
OR:
Sew two squares together to make a pillow.
OR:
Sew 8 squares together to make a cube. A small cube can be a cat toy. A larger cube can be a 'ball' to play games with or a bean bag for a carnival game.
Sew a rectangle in half and make an 'envelope hat'. Add tassels or bells to the corner if you want.
Harder fix but worth it:
Learn to increase and decrease. Then you can get off the yellow brick road and on to something triangular or star shaped or whatever shape you can dream of.
Learn to knit on circular needles or double pointed needles. It's not hard. Once you can make tubes, you can make sleeves or a tube dress or a stuffed snake or a tube that doubles as a hood and neckscarf or tube socks or arm mitts (gauntlets).
Ready, set, go knit.

Even those of us more experienced knitters forget sometimes how easy it is to make something simple yet elegant :)
