Ok, I’m almost done knitting a baby blanket out of king tut cotton. I need to back it as the color changes, did I mention it’s pastel rainbow, fray a bit which seems to be in the nature of this yarn, even though it is wonderful to work with otherwise.
I was thinking of using white cotton flannel and just hand sewing it on the back, but has anyone ever done this? Or does anyone have any other suggestions that might work better? I’m a bit nervous about this aspect of the project.

Re: Backing a knitted baby blanket
Thu, November 16, 2006 - 8:22 AMi have never backed a knitted item - but i would think you might want to research the shrink factor before sewing the two cotten pieces together. if you still have your gauge swatch, throw that in the washer with a swatch of the flannel, it would be a shame to have the blanket go kaddywhampus becuase the two cottons shrunk differenlty.

Thu, November 16, 2006 - 8:39 AMI have backed a knitted baby blanket. I used fleece, which is nice & soft. I agree about matching the shrink factor of the materials if you intend to machine wash it.

Thu, November 16, 2006 - 12:31 PMThanks. I think I’ll do the swatch test.
I had planned on washing the fabric before hand anyway, but am always nervous about washing something knitted. But I think I can handle the swatch test without worry. -

Re: Backing a knitted baby blanket
Sun, November 19, 2006 - 4:17 PMPlease note king tut cotton yarn shrinks when washed. Ger. my lovely blanket that was 36x48 is now blocking at 33x40. my family inidcates that this is still fine for a baby, but ger. the swatch didn't do this! now i have way more cream flece to back it with than i need, and it dosen't meet Al's specificaiton. Never, and i mean never get roped into knitting for your master(qi gong, nothing unusual). This is gunna suck and i have to tell him i goofed. i just want to cry because now i feel, unreasonably i know, like a complete failure and have wasted 100 hours of work. i know i'll feel better in the morning, or at least after a beer of two, but really frustrated right now. Maybe i shouldn't have tried a new yarn, with a new pattern stitch, on a project i've never done before. oh, wait that might be the issue i bit off more than i can once again. ger. -

Re: Backing a knitted baby blanket
Mon, November 20, 2006 - 8:25 AMBreathe. Have a beer. You'll be fine. It is a gift made with love and care. It will still serve to wrap a baby and keep him/her warm and toasty and loved.
You done good with 100 hours of work. Remember that... -

Re: Here are the photos.
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 9:45 AMa baby blanket needs to be washable, and washed before you give it as a gift, certainly, but you can address the size issue a few different ways. try a 4 inch wide crochet border, it'll look like it's intentional. and then, use a satin bias border. babies love soft things near their faces, and on the ones I've used this on for my family children, that's the part that wears out first.
