first sweater project

good morning fellow knitters,

i am starting my first sweater. i am so scared. yet i am sick of knitting scarves.

i took a sweater knitting class. which was really cool. but i forgot most of it. and i don't want to retake the class due to the expense.

but the teacher that taught the class was amazing. a certified Master knitter.

my question to you is should i try to do alterations as i go? and if so...how do i do that?

and gauge..i get so confused about gauge...i have that litle metal gauge tool and everything...but i don't know how to count the little v's or the little bumps i have a hard time seeing where one stitich ends and the other begins.

but i am good knitter. i am just sick of scarves.

any suggestions or advice?

bright blessings,

baby d.

There are many ways to knit a sweater. Some easy, some hard. Did your class come with a book? You might find it less frustrating to start with a vest. If you are really bent on it being a sweater, try to get a good book on how to figure out different styles of sleeves, collars, etc. Keep in mind your figure plusses and minuses. Bulky yarn makes us look heavier than we really are. Thinner yarns can take a very long time to knit up. If you pick a pattern with less details, it will be a lot easier to make. Everytime you add pockets, zippers, collars, etc. it makes life more difficult. Good luck and keep us posted.

i found a good book with a very basic sweater. and i am getting ready to do gauge swatch. no zippers, no pockets, no extra details. it is not too thin of a yarn that i chose. hopefully all will go well.

and of course i will keep everybody posted. hopefully it should be finished by next year this time...LOL.

      bright blessings,

      baby d.

I was reading my copy of Stitch'N Bitch Nation last night and found info starting on page 20 that describes in detail how to make a sweater, including getting the measurements from your favorite sweaters.
