Try casting on with a pair of needles one size larger and then when you make additional rows, switch back to the size your pattern calls for. Most beginners cast on too tightly and get frustrated trying to knit the first row.
Knitting Tip#2
Tired of paying high prices for knitting needles? Try the thrift shop. Make sure to ask at the counter, as they tend to stick them in places you'd never think to look.
Then try EBAY. Sometimes you can get a whole lot of needles for maybe $10.00.
