shawls are usually open and lacey and very much for a girl, I think.
Ponchos, OTOH, are either closed on the sides, or at least on the back and the front sides are 'heavy', then, and are both for men and women.
Men here in South America have always worn ponchos, though it's more part of a Campesino's garment, it's considered to be part of a gentlemen's attire in some parts.
Our President here (Presidente Alvaro Uribe) sometimes wears a poncho hanging/folded on his right shoulder. I think it looks good.

anyone knitted a shawl/poncho for a young boy? i free-formed one for my 6 year old out of recycled silk. i think it is adorable on him (will try to post pic soon)- very elfish. it's kinda more like a cape. it has a button closure at the top in front and drapes back from there. does that make sense? i am new at this.

my son likes it. his dad thinks it's more appropriate for a girl. my son agrees that it is girlish but doesn't mind that at all.

i can't recall seeing other boys in shawls.

wondering about this. . .
