wool fever

After bumping into someone in chat that was talking about felting hats, I decided I just had to try it. So I got my biggest bin of yarn out, dumped the entire thing on the sleeper couch and went through it all, And not a single skein of 100% wool in the whole bunch. Hangs head sadly. I get most of my yarn at Dept. stores, and they practically never have 100% wool. I've been to fancy knitting shops, and while they have wool, it costs an arm and a leg. I can barely get up enough moxie to buy even one or two skiens of it at those prices. And forget about buying enough to make a whole sweater. On rare occasion I'll find some at a thrift store. Sure, we all want the good stuff, but I can't justify spending that kind of money.

I get mine at a local weaving center. It is not cheap, but its not as expensive as some I've seen in catalogs, either.

If it is at least 50% wool it should felt. I have felted Lion Brand landscapes wich is 50% wool and 50% acrylic (?). It took one extra spin in the washer to get it to really felt up, other than that I didn't encounter any other problems.

Also Knit Picks.com sells 100% wool for $1.79 a skein. It is approx 110 yards and is worsted weight. and felts up great!

You could also try eBay, Froogle, or another online site. You can really find some good deals if you look around.

Personally, I'm a little leery of buying something like yarn online (since you can't feel it or always trust that you're getting the exact color). But, if you know exactly what you want (brand, model, color code), then as long as you buy from the same dyelot, you should be fine.

I'm making a sweater for The Nephew, and if I can't find anything I really like at Michael's, I'll probably buy something from eBay in Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, which I already know I love. My only problem left will be the lack of instant gratification ;)

Lucky for me that since I do freeform knitting and crochet, I can use nearly any texture or color of yarn. And no amount is too small. I have bought some yarn on EBAY and after I added in the shipping, it turned out it's usually no cheaper than going to Michael's, Walmart or Joannes. Unfortunately those places don't carry much wool, or linen, or silk...so if I want those it's time to buy online or the gourmet knitting shops.
